What is Montessori education all about? This is a recurring question I hear constantly. Someone asked it again this morning so I thought it might be a good idea to actually put this out there. Believe me there is much more to it, but at least this gives you a simple answer in a nutshell.
Montessori Education, was started by Maria Montessori in the early twentieth century. It is child centered and basically follows the developmental stages of the growth of the child and adolescent to provide a correspondingly appropriate education method the meets the requirement of each child.
Each child is unique, we always start from the concrete and move on to abstractions. The Montessori Materials help a lot to give concrete hands on experience before the transfer to abstractions. Some of the materials even help to foster the bridge between the two. Respect for the child is paramount. The child the teacher and the environment are the backbone of this method which must be held in a proportionate balance. For me it is the best way to educate a child. You are able to get the best out of the child if you do it right. They grow up to be confident, independent, and useful citizens in their communities.
