Train Up your child the right way

I just listened to a great sermon on Transgenerational Leadership…

It spoke to me on so many levels…

Remember the story of Job..the sufferings, the questions and answers?

Elihu the youngest spoke last…

Why?

Because the oldest are supposed the know better be wiser. Are they really?

Job 32:9 Great men are not always wise, nor do the aged always understand justice.

Basically the same situation as a few generations ago where the young ar to be seen but not heard, speak only when spoken to!

God has always taken the stand that the young have a voice they have something to say especially if you have prepared them properly…

Proverbs 22:6 says, ‘Train up your child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.’

‘Train up’, doesn’t mean flog or beat up your child, it means ‘teach and imbibe the right values into the child’.

A child who knows God, truly knows God will grow up wise, taking and making good decisions and choices…

If you have guided the child right then there is no need to stop them from speaking up.

Sometimes as adults we forget that our children have the capacity to think as well.

This is their time… it is their future and not ours. They are better equipped than a lot of us to even deal with the tidy we face than most of us… the older ones are…

Look at the trend in the world today!

Women lead many nations and they are thriving.

USA has many young “Nigerians” appointed to important posts all over the nation, yet our nation is ruled by people who where in office when I was a teenager!

I am now a Mama… truly this is not right.

One thing I can again draw out of this are the following which are also Montessori principles, can you believe this?

A. Respect the child: this is something we often don’t even begin to understand but for brevity let us just state the following:

  1. Children want to learn, let them learn joyfully and not under stress.
  2. Children can learn to behave right if we teach them.
  3. Teaching a child the right way is a process of training not a process of forcing children to do what we say.
  4. Training takes time. Change can come quickly but accepting the change? Let’s be honest that takes time for most of us!

Therefore give your child time. They will get there.

B. Give freedom to the children, absolute control on the child is not healthy, this is a wide area of discussion so for this point let’s simple put it this way: speak up and find your voice, as adults we must speak up if we know that things need to change.

Also allow the children to speak too, stop shutting them up because we think they don’t know anything!

They have a brain and can think just like we can

C. Prepare children for life: not by teaching artificial curriculum based on jobs will change in the next couple of years so let’s teach technology instead.

Just in case you are preparing to tell me off about this. I don’t mean don’t teach technology, I mean sort it out first and ensure you are teaching technology in an age appropriate and age preparedness way!
